Keeping at it

Since mid-September online poker hasn't been a lot of fun. I could run much better. With seven days of November left I'm essentially even for the month (down a little on Stars and up slightly on the new incarnation of Full Tilt). I tried ace-to-five triple draw on Full Tilt last night. It looked profitable, with people going crazy with rough sevens, but I couldn't hit goddamn thing. Variance seems even higher in that game than in 2-7 (if that's possible): I'm playing a few more hands, which will push variance up, but my opponents are playing a lot more, creating big pots and sending variance through the roof.

Last weekend I played an interesting three-handed session of 25c/50c on Full Tilt. I made $30 in just 90 hands, winning 11 of 13 showdowns. One of my opponents was terrible and was dealt a pat hand about 20% of the time, and you can imagine what some of those hands looked like. Often when I raised him he'd try to reraise me off my made seven or eight. Obviously I drew well in that session; sometimes I couldn't beat a pat ten or jack over three draws if my life depended on it.

Never have I been happier to bust out of a tournament than on Saturday night. After 3½ hours, at about 1:30am, I was out of the MicroMillions badugi in 467th place out of 2488. I only won one pot in the super-deep first hour, and I thought if I could lose my internet connection in the second hour I'd probably make the final table. In the third hour I went on a good run to reach 20,000 (four times my starting stack) after earlier surviving an all-in, but it was all downhill from there and frankly my eventual demise was a relief. In a couple of hours I'll have a go at the triple draw MicroMillions.

Update:
I'm out of the triple draw tournament in the middle of the field. Just like in the badugi, we started with 5000 chips. I never got above 7000. A few times I felt I was just one decent pot away from making some headway, but that pot never ended up on my lap. It's never too disappointing to get knocked out of a micro tournament though.

Here's the only really notable hand from the MicroMillions. Konstant earlier drew one all the way and made a three-card king. He clearly didn't know what he was doing; I thought he might not even know the rules. Maybe my cap on the flop was overkill but I was sure I had heaps of equity three-way.

October monthly report

After seven consecutive winning months, October was my worst ever month as I lost $171. My bankroll is now $3186. Even if you take out my horror two-hour session of $3/$6 badugi, it still wasn't a great month.

Gah! I wouldn't normally break T42A pre but in a four-way capped pot it seemed right at the time as it was very likely my hand would be run down and I'd have implied odds with my draw. Of course in a big pot implied odds matter less. I never expected Victor to draw two. Even ignoring the result I think I should have patted but it's close. J42A would be a clear break.

Sick hands

I had a decent weekend of online poker; my bankroll is now above the three-grand mark by a solitary buck.

I had one attempt at satelliting into the $215 single draw WCOOP; just eight entered the $22 buy-in satellite (creating an overlay) but I ran cold and busted out in short order in sixth place. I'd planned to give it a couple more goes but I ended up babysitting for my cousin and that was that. I might have a go at a satellite for Wednesday's badugi WCOOP even though it's unlikely I'll play it. I say unlikely rather than impossible because I've been feeling sick since Saturday (my seven-month cold has got a lot worse) and almost didn't go to work today, so if I'm feeling too crap to go to work on Wednesday but well enough to play online poker, and I've qualified, I'll play. I wonder how many people take stone-cold sickies to play large poker tournaments. My guess is quite a few.

I'd been losing at 5 PLO8 but joined a 10 PLO8 table by mistake and have stayed at that level since. Should I ever be open-limping at a five-handed table? With my high-only hand I want to see a flop cheaply and really don't want to get three-bet. I know Michi is aggro. I'm glad when the third player comes along. Chill waited a long time before checking. I don't pay much attention to timing tells but this was a reasonable indicator that he had a good badugi and finally (sensibly) decided not to donk bet. This made my check-raise bluff far less likely to work, and with quite a poor draw my best course of action would have been to fold.

When Rodaley caps the flop I decide just to call down. OK, he knows I have a weaker range after drawing two but good sevens and better are hardly a rarity from someone one, so I felt I was beaten over half the time. I was surprised to be the winner by some margin. Judging by his comment: "you hit very low after drawing two", two-card draws hit more often than he realises.
