November monthly report

I've just found out I have to play tennis both tomorrow and the next day, so the next time I hit the virtual felt, it'll be December.

November has been a very good month. My overall profit hit the $7000 milestone today for the first time. I'm currently above that mark by a single dollar, having made $609 for the month. That includes $80 worth of bonuses from Full Tilt, as well as $12 of rakeback. My Full Tilt bankroll is sitting at $873; on Poker Stars I'm at $1228.

Single draw has been good to me this month; the introduction of that game on Full Tilt has certainly helped. Today I got especially lucky when I made number three and got all my chips in; my opponent (who seemed a decent player) had a totally unfoldable number six. That good fortune aside, I seem to know what I'm doing in single draw. Add a couple more draws, however, and I'm no longer sure. I feel competent in triple draw, but my results don't bear those feelings out. Admittedly I haven't played enough hands for my win (or loss) rates to be significant. Here are some hands from last night's losing session:

Hand 1

Full Tilt Poker Game #25900461781: Table Silver Knolls (6 max) - $0.50/$1 - Limit 2-7 Triple Draw - 04:00:01 ET - 2010/11/27

plutoman20 bets $0.50 I've now got a smooth eight draw so I bet. Should I be betting every time I improve (even to iffy draws) in this spot? I really don't know.
bassviol raises to $1 So he's probably pat, but not necessarily.
plutoman20 calls $0.50
*** SECOND DRAW *** (Pot: $4.50)
plutoman20 discards 1 card [4s]
bassviol discards 1 card OK, he's not pat. I guess he's got a draw to the nuts.

plutoman20 bets $1 Normally I wouldn't do this with this hand (it has showdown value), but as he's been the aggressor so far, I feel he'll put me on a good hand when I bet out here.
bassviol folds I might well have had the best hand, but I also think he could have folded an ace or king.

Later on I had another hand with Michigan that wasn't too dissimilar. He raises UTG, I reraise with K5432, everybody else folds, he calls. First draw: he draws three (!), I catch an ace, he checks, I bet, he calls. Second draw: he pats (!), I catch a ten (wondering if there's any chance that could be good enough), he bets, I just call and decide to draw. Maybe I could have got him to break by raising. Third draw, he pats, I catch a queen, we check the river, he shows 96532.

plutoman20 calls $0.50 I'll often cap one-card draws, but here there's no third player to get value from, and since Jrsears' range must consist of one-card draws and pat hands, I can't see how capping will achieve anything.
*** FIRST DRAW *** (Pot: $3.75)
plutoman20 discards 1 card [8h]
jrsears77 discards 2 cards OK, I was totally wrong about his range. Reraising an under-the-gun player with a two-card draw makes no sense to me, unless the UTG player is hyperaggressive and raises with stuff like 764 or 864.

jrsears77 shows [9s 7s 6h 5d 4d] 9,7,6,5,4 What on earth did he start with? I guess by drawing so rough, you make a lot of unbreakable hands, so your decisions on later streets become easier. If my opponents are three-betting 754 pre-draw against an UTG opener, then not raising when they make a hand, surely I'll beat them eventually. Or maybe not.

The value of blockers

Hand 1
I should be seeing the last draw here. Tapirboy is a good player who recognises that I've probably improved to a strong three-card, so he'll happily reraise with any badugi. And the pot is easily big enough for me to peel.

Hand 3
I think the most difficult spot in single draw is standing pat out of position with a rough hand against someone drawing one. Against this player, who bluffs a lot, it's even harder. As this session wore on, and I became aware of just how bluffy Bar_men is, I began to regret the way I played this hand. I should have bet seven or eight bucks post-draw; he'd have been less likely to bluff me. Who knows what he had. As it happens, I was in a similar situation tonight, with exactly the same hand, and bet it. My opponent folded.

If you're going to shove, this would seem to be a particularly bad hand to do it with. This hand has enormous implied odds, and by going all-in you forfeit all of those. Then when he gets called, surely he should break here.

Hand 6
The value of blockers in this game can at times be significant. When Andrey pats behind, I surrender, not that I ever expected to see a top-twenty hand (the chances of that kind of hand are very much reduced due to my holding). If I was him I would have four-bet pre-draw. At work today (yes it was a slow day) I calculated some card removal effects; I show the results of those at the end of this hand.

The probability of being dealt the nuts in deuce-to-seven is one in 2548. A top-twenty hand is therefore a one-in-127 shot. But, given that I have 44433, the probability of any one player having a top-twenty hand (which Andrey did indeed have in the hand above) is one in 262, i.e. 51% less likely than without the card removal effect.

Probabilities for some other hands (the probability shown is the chance of any one player being dealt a top-20 hand given that you have that particular holding):
22227..........1 in 463............72% less likely compared with no card removal
22277..........1 in 286............56% less likely
22777..........1 in 251............49% less likely
27777..........1 in 273............53% less likely
96532..........1 in 170............25% less likely
Broadway......1 in 75..............69% more likely

Having done these calculations, the blocking value of paired low cards is greater than I first thought. Of course, if you happen to hold all four deuces, your opponents can't possibly have (or make) any of the top eight hands. In a deep game, it might be worth going to the mat with quad deuces, both times in your life that you get them.

Biggest day since May

Yesterday was my most profitable single day since the SCOOP badugi. I made $195, not including the $20 bonus I received from Full Tilt. Single draw and badugi were both kind to me. I had two remarkable sessions of $1-$2 badugi back-to-back. On Poker Stars I made $52 in just 22 hands, then moved to Full Tilt where I won $71 in 43 hands. Today I'm down fractionally after a dismal badugi session, dropping $45 in 62 hands (of which I won three). Badugi on Full Tilt continues to be extremely volatile; the average pot size in a $1-$2 game is often around $15, and at one point yesterday it hit $20. With the play being so loose, the values of starting hands change somewhat. Good two-card draws go up in value, while dealt pats (even very good ones like eights and nines) go down. Three-card sixes or better are still very good starting hands, but it now matters less whether you have 32A or 643; with so many people in the pot, a good three-card will rarely win unimproved. Rough three-cards like 754 become real trouble hands: there's an increased likelihood of making the second-best hand.

Here are eight hands from the weekend so far:

Hand 1
Last weekend I folded the very same hand against someone who check-raised the turn. He was snowing. I didn't want to make the same mistake twice. I'm not sure what Romuloft was doing in this pot in the first place. Perhaps the snow was premeditated, but the chances are someone will make a genuine badugi along the way, sending his snowing plans out the window.

Hand 2
I'm dealt a monster badugi here, but there's a lot of action and I think I might well be beaten. I end up looking a bit silly when I table my hand! Romuloft, by the way, went from $64 to zero in under twenty minutes at this table. He was a bit unlucky bit did overplay a lot of rough hands.

I guess you'd call this a four-card royal flush. However, if you were playing for high, you'd have to rank quads above a straight flush: it's over three times less likely. Martin calls with something that doesn't beat a lot of bluffs - did he know that his opponent was ignorant of the rules?

Firstly Tapirboy is a very good triple draw and badugi player, so perhaps I'd do well to avoid him. Secondly I've had more than my fair share of this kind of hand on Full Tilt. FlipAAA shouldn't be in this pot at all; if someone raises pre-draw in front of you, calling with a two-card draw is throwing money away (unless you know the raiser is very aggressive) - you just won't hit your hand often enough. But he does hit it here. Against a one-card draw I'd just call the raise with a rough pat eight, but against a two-card draw it seems too weak.

I don't like my bet on the flop. When Dakray bets into me on the turn, he hasn't necessarily got a badugi at all (I don't think), so I raise. Then he bets straight into me on the river and I figure I'm beaten. There's a hell of a lot of what they call donking in these games; it takes some getting used to.

This is why you should never limp strong draws, in this game or in badugi. The problem I faced here was that Tinchaso limped all his draws, whether they were one-card draws to monsters or crappy two-card ones. But by overlimping, I let in two-card draws behind me. I make a crying call here, expecting to be beaten. It's just as well I didn't hit my 8-7 because I probably would have raised.

Three KCL hands

Three hands from last weekend's 25c/50c KCL games on Full Tilt.

Hand 1
I don't really see the point of bluffing with a medium-strength hand like a 9-7. Maybe he didn't think he was bluffing; he didn't strike me as being a particularly good player.

Hand 2
This was a strange one. I don't know why Mr2jt patted a queen with such a smooth draw available. Maybe he thought that patting would make me break a better hand (in that case he thought right) but isn't the aim of the game, if possible, to take your opponent's stack?

Hand 3
In an earlier post I mentioned something about post-draw bet sizing. I said that anything less than 60% of the pot leaves you open to potential bluff raises. Well here Mr2jt makes a half-pot bet to induce a bluff-raise from someone drawing two, and it works a treat. How would you balance this play? For every pat seven you get umpteen rough nines and tens. It's something I'll have to think about.

Up-and-down weekend

Yesterday I made $150 on the virtual poker tables. My best session was a $70 profit (in 146 hands) in a 25c/50c single draw game on Full Tilt. The other main highlight was a second-place finish in the $11 single draw tournament on Poker Stars. Unfortunately there were only eleven runners so my payout was just $33. When we got heads-up I was behind by about 2½ to one. Almost immediately I got a draw to the nuts and my opponent, who had an eight draw, put me all in. He made a queen while I hit a jack to give me a slight chip lead. Very soon after we were both dealt pat nines and we stacked off again. My 9-8 lost to his 9-6. A few hands later it was all over: he was lucky enough to be dealt the stone-cold nuts, leaving me drawing very dead. I've finished second in five of the last eight tournaments I've entered (since the SCOOP in May, I've only played seven tournaments). It seems if there are thousands of entrants I'll come second; if there are just a handful I'll still come second. Following that to its logical conclusion, I should avoid heads-up tournaments like the plague.

Today I had a horrendous badugi session. In just 75 hands of $1/$2 on Full Tilt I dropped $52. Eight of the nine hands I showed down were losers. Obviously I was running very cold there, but overall I'm struggling in that game, even though a lot of the play I see looks pretty poor. Perhaps it's just variance. What really adds to the swings is that a lot of the time the pot gets so bloated by the turn that you get the odds to draw a third time. In tighter games you can just fold and save the $2.

Here are some hands:

Hand 3
Normally a four-bet in position with a 10-6 is a good play I think, but the problem here is that due to my shortish stack, the only four-bet size that makes any sense is a shove. I would have been better to have just called his three-bet and drawn. When he calls my all-in and pats I don't fancy my chances. With my gutshot draw, I honestly don't know whether patting or breaking is best here.

Hand 4
I thought this was an interesting one. I hit a nine on the second draw and Idaho raised. I break my nine only for Idaho to draw himself. If he could see that I had a very breakable hand, this was great play from him (he goes from being a definite underdog to almost 50:50). Given that he can't see my hand I'm not so sure. Also, should I be breaking here?

Wow. I guess I should have called, right? This is where reads come in handy, and I don't have any. Sixty-nine, dude!

Monday night was a good one for me. I made $84, mostly in two short sessions of 25c/50c single draw on Poker Stars. Here are three of Monday's hands:

Hand 1
Donkery was living up to his name. The more I saw him play, the more I wished I'd called the four-bet with the advantage of position.

Hand 2
This was the big one. It had shades of that $100 pot I played a few weeks ago. Pre-draw, wk20a could have had anything up to a ten, but when he bet on the end, I expected to have the second-best hand. What would I have done if I'd hit a nine (which, as it turns out, would have been enough)? I really don't know.

Hand 3
This was the very first hand of the second session. I'd had my eye on this table for a little while and Donkery was seemingly betting and raising willy-nilly. Here he might have remembered the earlier hand where I folded to his four-bet and thought I'd do the same again, but this time I estimated his range at anything from the nuts to a royal flush. I'm ahead of the majority of that, so I decide to gamble. He had a nine draw, and thankfully missed it.

The Full Tilt single draw games run at smaller stakes, right down to the 2c/5c blind level. They also feature antes of half the small blind (or slightly less in some cases). I think this is a good thing as it promotes action; there is sometimes a distinct lack of that in the 25c/50c games on Stars (although not on Monday night!).
Lower stakes mean you can experiment a bit (particularly with bluffs) without risking too much. Of course the small stakes also mean you're more likely to get called.
In a 10c/20c game on Full Tilt on Monday night, we were heads-up to the draw, he drew two and I drew one, pairing my six. I bluffed my pair, he then check-raised me, I folded, then he showed me two tens!
In a 5c/10c game last night I four-bet pre-draw out of position with a very pretty looking "skip straight flush", J9753, all hearts. My opponent had been three-betting liberally, and the last time I'd four-bet I'd had a pat 8-7. He folded. If he'd reraised again I'd have let my hand go; had he called I'd have patted and bombed the pot after the draw.

Draw on Full Tilt

Full Tilt, the world’s second-biggest online poker site, introduced draw games last Friday. This potential bonanza had been talked about for a while, but no dates were ever mentioned so I wasn’t exactly holding my breath. Then suddenly, it happened. My intention was never to deposit ever again, but the opportunity to make money from these new games seemed too good to pass up, so I transferred $600 onto the site. Now is a great time for Kiwis and Aussies to deposit (with the NZ dollar at almost 80c and the Aussie at parity against the greenback) and a horrible time to cash out.

So far it hasn’t turned to the cash cow I was hoping, although I had a busy weekend so I couldn’t play many hands. I started with $1-$2 badugi – one of my bread-and-butter games on Poker Stars – but I dumped $42.50 in that game in double-quick time. The play was far more aggressive than I’m used to on Stars – capped pots pre-draw with nobody pat were fairly standard – so it was high-variance stuff. I probably misplayed two or three hands and got a bit unlucky when my pat tens ran into better pats and people hit sevens and eights with their two-card draws.

I’ve also tried KCL (they have that at lower stakes than on Stars) and ace-to-five triple draw, a new game for me. Ace-to-five appears a less interesting game than deuce-to-seven but it has the potential to be profitable because my opponents might not know what they’re doing. There is one major snag however: I might not know what I’m doing either. Here’s my take on strategy so far:

  • People tend to overvalue hands in this game. Something like 7643A isn’t as good as it looks. It’s number 14, equivalent to 87632 in 2-7 (in fact it’s even worse than that – see below). So by drawing to fives and sixes, people will pay off multiple big bets when you hit.
  • Why is an A-5 hand worse than its 2-7 equivalent? Well, you’ll see monster hands more often in A-5 (that’s a scary fact given how often people show up with a wheel in 2-7). Take two-card draws to the nuts for instance. In both games there are ten of these, but in 2-7 some of them (namely 754, 753, 743 and 543) are unplayable unless you’re in position or can get in cheaply from the blinds; they can make the nuts but they can also make disasters. So a lot of these nut draws (and other things like 764 and 653) are folded from the start and never materialise. In contrast, it seems you can open any two-card wheel draw in A-5, from any position (I might be wrong about this). There’s also the fact that flushes count against you in 2-7, although the effect of this would seem to be small.
  • On the subject of two-card draws, 62A (which can make nos. 2, 3, 4, 12, 13 and 16) appears to be better than 543 (which can make 1, 5, 6, 10, 11 and 21). They both seem playable in any position. Conversely, 72A (which can make 7, 8, 9, 12, 13 and 16) doesn’t look as good as 654 (4, 5, 6, 19, 20 and 21). I don’t think you should play either of those out of position.
  • I’m still not sure what to do with one-card seven draws like 732A and 762A. I’d be more inclined to break the latter but I guess you should probably break both pre-draw if it’s multi-way. I’d be hard pushed to break a dealt pat seven.
  • On the last draw in 2-7, a pat jack is a favourite over a one-card draw. In A-5 you need a pat ten to be a favourite. But in both games it can often be close to a coin flip, and if you’ve got a big draw beneath your top card you should probably go for the monster.
  • In A-5 the likelihood is that someone will hit a hand before the last draw, so there are fewer opportunities to bluff on the end (or to snow) than in 2-7.
