November monthly report, 2012 annual report and FINAL report

Well this is it. Game over. I haven't cashed out just yet because last night I transferred my Full Tilt balance onto Stars, which counts as a deposit, and Stars doesn't let you cash out within 48 hours of depositing.

Before attempting to cash out I wanted to convert all my tourney tickets, use up all my frequent flyer points, basically get rid of anything I can use to play real money poker. I made that "mistake" 18 months ago: cashing out all my my Stars money only to use my T$ to build a bankroll again.

Yesterday I spent the bulk of my Full Tilt points on a $26 tournament ticket which I used for a so-called triple chance no-limit Omaha-8 tourney. You get 6000 chips in three parcels of 2000, and can decide to use your second and third parcels at any time in the first hour of play. I cashed in all three parcels right away, hoping (but not really expecting) to have the sort of edge that would be maximised by having a bigger stack. I got lucky with my table draw - I was surprised by what seemed a poor general standard of play. At the first break I was up to nearly twice my starting stack, and was still in the 11,000s at the second break. I hit only one or two minor wobbles while I grew my stack to be around average as we reached the nine-man final table from 55 starters. It was there things got tricky for me - I couldn't win a pot of any significance and I was soon one of the short stacks. We were eight-handed for 25 minutes - with seven getting paid - but it seemed much longer. I got my stack in pre with A3TQ rainbow and with two cards to come I was staring down the bubble-boy barrel, but I made runner-runner nut low to survive. Even with that reprieve I was still far from safe until a pat smooth nine badugi turned into a boat to double me up. From then on it was really my patience - or rather my opponents' impatience - that saw me climb to third, which is where I finished for a welcome payout of $198.

So I snagged my second biggest tourney payout ever on the day I quit poker for ever ... maybe. It seemed I was significantly +EV, and the no-limit format which allows for more kamikaze plays (people sure made them) only increased the EV.

I blew the rest of my Full Tilt points on a steps tournament - which resulted in a replay and ultimately failure - and a few satellites that amounted to nothing. I transferred my balance of $1701 to Stars, uninstalled Full Tilt, and set about exhausting my Stars points. I won three $11 tournament tickets via sit 'n' go satellites and sold them, along with my other tourney money, for $70 to a regular buyer on Twoplustwo. My Stars balance, which I'll soon be able to withdraw, is $4832 including last night's transfer.

I made $199 in November (I'm including 1st December - my last day of online poker - in that figure). But for yesterday's NLO8 score I'd have been break-even. I actually made a loss of $56 on Stars but a $255 profit on Full Tilt. I made $2359 over the eleven months from January. My lifetime profit is $12,389.

Overall this online poker lark has been fun but the time feels right to give it away. I have too much of a type-B personality and frankly am not smart enough to be a big enough winner in big enough games to make a living from online poker; my personality and intelligence level only allowed me to be competent in games that people are bad at, and eke out a profit that way. With every hour that I spent in front of the screen came a significant opportunity cost, and it's for that reason that I'm giving up.

Before I go, here are some of the notable hands from yesterday's NLO8 tournament:

Hand 1
Janik was a bit of a station, and at times a monkey. I really missed a bet on the river here. I thought, bugger, the river counterfeited me for low and all I've got are two lousy pair for high with all those straight draws, forgetting that I still had the second nut low thanks to my extra wheel card.

What was Urush playing at here? His hand is pure garbage. I guess he calls the flop because he's got a flush draw.

Hand 3
I wasn't observant enough to notice the previous hand when it took place. Given that hand, my fold here is indescribably awful. I was thinking boats, I was thinking wheels, I was thinking monsters under the bed. Looking back I'm pretty sure he didn't have an ace or 4-5. If he had me beat for high it was probably with twos full or threes full.

Hand 5
It's always nice when people bluff-shove when you're holding the nuts, especially when Aussies do it. Maybe this was a naked ace bluff with the ace of spades, but when there's only a flush draw out there with one card to come, it doesn't make much sense to me. This pot was a very useful one for me.

I'd been card dead for a while, and I was getting a bit short. I thought I stood a good chance of taking down the blinds due to my recent inactivity, but really my hand was too weak to open.

Hand 11
I guess I have to commit here when he shoves. When the flop came down I had one foot and four toes through the exit door.
Pre-flop I had a slight edge (53:47) due to my better high cards, and a 69% chance of at least surviving.
The flop was an absolute killer which only gave me 10% equity and an 87% chance of tournament death.
The deuce on the turn meant that 15 of the 40 possible river cards would keep me alive.

Hand 12
Having come through that near-death experience, I was still in last place and in need of some chips. I was happy to see a cheap flop here. For some reason I thought the Tottenham fan already had a straight on the flop with his PLO hand, not just an open-ender, so I thought I was behind. I was actually a 65% favourite when I got the money in (an 83% chance to survive with a 46% chance of scooping). The turn card gave me a guaranteed scoop and some breathing space in the tournament.

This was my bust-out hand. It's a good example of the importance of high card strength heads-up. I'm a slight dog pre-flop, 49:51, even with the better low, flush and straight possibilities. I flop a big draw, making me a 54:46 favourite, but that's where my luck ended. I could hardly complain.

Please let this be over

I got taken to the cleaners today. Again. I was hampered by a distinct inability to actually hit anything, while my opponents were hitting huge hands for fun. I really want this poker shit to be over, and to cash out the $4500-odd I've got on both sites, but I'm "only" 900 points or so from getting a $50 bonus on Stars so I'll wait until then. Today was such a nice day outside, and here I was, staring at a frigging screen losing three-figure amounts. What a waste.

Update: I played heaps today. Now it's points that matter, not dollars, and there are just under 800 points to go. It's a bit like pulling teeth. By the way it was a real up-and-down day which included my biggest ever winning session at 50c/$1 badugi ($76 in 335 hands) and a bad stack-off with a rough eight in single draw.

Keeping at it

Since mid-September online poker hasn't been a lot of fun. I could run much better. With seven days of November left I'm essentially even for the month (down a little on Stars and up slightly on the new incarnation of Full Tilt). I tried ace-to-five triple draw on Full Tilt last night. It looked profitable, with people going crazy with rough sevens, but I couldn't hit goddamn thing. Variance seems even higher in that game than in 2-7 (if that's possible): I'm playing a few more hands, which will push variance up, but my opponents are playing a lot more, creating big pots and sending variance through the roof.

Last weekend I played an interesting three-handed session of 25c/50c on Full Tilt. I made $30 in just 90 hands, winning 11 of 13 showdowns. One of my opponents was terrible and was dealt a pat hand about 20% of the time, and you can imagine what some of those hands looked like. Often when I raised him he'd try to reraise me off my made seven or eight. Obviously I drew well in that session; sometimes I couldn't beat a pat ten or jack over three draws if my life depended on it.

Never have I been happier to bust out of a tournament than on Saturday night. After 3½ hours, at about 1:30am, I was out of the MicroMillions badugi in 467th place out of 2488. I only won one pot in the super-deep first hour, and I thought if I could lose my internet connection in the second hour I'd probably make the final table. In the third hour I went on a good run to reach 20,000 (four times my starting stack) after earlier surviving an all-in, but it was all downhill from there and frankly my eventual demise was a relief. In a couple of hours I'll have a go at the triple draw MicroMillions.

Update:
I'm out of the triple draw tournament in the middle of the field. Just like in the badugi, we started with 5000 chips. I never got above 7000. A few times I felt I was just one decent pot away from making some headway, but that pot never ended up on my lap. It's never too disappointing to get knocked out of a micro tournament though.

Hand 1
Here's the only really notable hand from the MicroMillions. Konstant earlier drew one all the way and made a three-card king. He clearly didn't know what he was doing; I thought he might not even know the rules. Maybe my cap on the flop was overkill but I was sure I had heaps of equity three-way.
