January monthly report

I've got a job interview in Wellington on Tuesday so I can't afford to be badugi-ing, studding or any other kind of pokering until that's over. So I hope that by posting this before month's end I'll resist the temptation to play.

January was quite a trying month so I can't be too disappointed to finish up $343 ahead. That's less than in the two previous months, the main difference being the single draw cash games on Stars where I lost $102. The graph shows my performance in those games since October:

There are various reasons for that red block. First the games have been really tight so it feels as if nobody is making any money and we're all just swapping chips around, losing money to rake whenever we see the draw, with heavy action only happening when two big hands lock horns. I think introducing antes, even small ones, would inject some much-needed life into the games. Secondly maybe my own play has got a bit predictable. Perhaps I need to vary my bet-sizing more, and even try the odd crazy move like a check-raise all in with a straight. When people don't bet nines post-draw that just feels too risky though. Thirdly (and this is related to my first point) I'm putting money into pots thinking I'm ahead when I'm actually behind. And finally I think I've simply had a bit of bad luck.

I've done well at badugi this month although I think I've run above average in $1/$2 and $2/$4. I've only played very short sessions, particularly at $2/$4. There I've made the mistake of focusing too much on how much I'm up or down for the session, and either not wanting to give back my profits when I'm ahead or not wanting to lose any more when I'm behind. I guess I'm just not accustomed to $50 swings in ten minutes; I imagine I'll get used to it over time.

So it's onwards and upwards. I'm looking forward to visiting Wellington for the first time in years (I can't say I'm looking forward particularly to the interview!), then I'll be back at the poker tables with a vengeance. There will be no time to waste - February is a short month!

I give up...

During current Badugi session you were dealt 74 hands
Pots won if drawing - 0 of 14 (0%)
Pots won at showdown - 0 of 3 (0%)
Pots won without showdown - 3
...and I'm down nearly $100. It might help if I stopped snowing.

Update: Since then I've been dealt both the top two hands (!) and won big pots with them. I need to moan about my bad luck more often. The above stats are hardly that ridiculous anyway in what is a pretty high-variance game.

A quick heads-up

Well it was a fairly long heads-up actually. On Monday I took second in the "early bird" single draw tournament after four hours and exactly 500 hands. The middle stages of the tournament went very well for me. It wasn't as it I took down pot after pot with sevens and eights - in fact over half the hands I showed down were losers - but I won the pots that mattered. When we got heads-up though it was a different story. I had a chip lead of nearly three to two, but my opponent quickly whittled away at that, then overtook me, and although I hung in there for a decent period of time I never came back. It turned out my conqueror is some kind of heads-up KCL expert. He told me in chat that he made a living from it. On the right is his graph for heads-up tourneys over the last three months. Forty-five-degree angle graphs are not what you want to see! That's a lot of money to make from three months of purely heads-up poker.
In this morning's early bird I came fourth. It had a massive overlay - I don't mind getting up early if there's free money up for grabs. Only six paid, i.e. one of the final table would miss out; as we got down to seven I was the most likely candidate. I was really hanging on for dear life. When the bubble burst I was told I'd "played my Kiwi arse off" - I found that funny.
This afternoon I finished 93rd in the PLO8 blogger tournament (WBCOOP), enough for an $11 SCOOP ticket and a WBCOOP main event ticket although I doubt I can make that. I also tried the PLO high tourney on Tuesday - I don't know what I'm doing in that game and it was hardly surprising that I busted out early.
Here are some of the more interesting hands (in my opinion) from the last few days:
Hand 1
Win this hand and I'm ahead by two and a half to one. Lose and I'm out. How many outs have I got here? Probably not many, which is why (after using my time bank) I folded. Make the six a seven (or an eight) and I'd have called.

Hand 2
PeccoKimi has been showing down flush draws and big trips; he's clearly playing for high. But because of him, I end up virtually stacking off trying to make an eight. There were various reasons why I called. For starters there's a whole heap of dead money here. Secondly Zaharik knows that Pecco is playing for high, so Zaharik's hand isn't necessarily super strong. Thirdly Pecco's high hand most likely contains high cards, so my outs are probably live (I was unlucky that he had two of the threes I needed). And finally it's a rebuy, so I can have another go. As it happened I didn't rebuy. I ran my last 200 chips up to more than 4000 before busting in the middle of the field. I read a comment recently that there's more money to be made from triple draw than single at the moment. That might be true, but if the overlays continue and there are still people who think the object of the game is the exact opposite of what it really is, I'll be playing single draw tournaments for a while yet.

I hate these sorts of hands where you get whipsawed. Should I have folded the turn facing two more bets cold and possibly drawing to two outs to tie?

Hand 10
Here I make a regrettable fold. It just didn't seem I even a 6% chance of my hand being good. Spedtsberg was betting anything, so might well have had just a pair of kings. But unless Pacogreen is a complete muppet (or misclicked) he can beat KK. And there's nothing I beat that beats KK apart from, well, the hand Pacogreen actually had. What I didn't take into account, unfortunately, was that hadn't seen a single ace.

It's WBCOOP time!

That's the World Blogger Championship of Online Poker if you're wondering. It starts in a couple of days. The instructions mention something about waiting five days to get my blog ethereally verified (how it works is a mystery to me). So perhaps I've missed the boat, just like I do in stud whenever I make trips on an early street (from my limited experience so far). I'll be sure to tell you all how I get on if indeed I do play.

Online Poker

I have registered to play in the PokerStars World Blogger Championship of Online Poker! The WBCOOP is a free online Poker tournament open to all Bloggers, so register on WBCOOP to play.

Registration code: XXXXXX 071584

There aren't any draw WBCOOP tournaments (and why should there be? - only weird people like me play those games) but I like the sound of PLO8 and will try and play that one if I'm registered in time and not too busy hopelessly sending off CVs.

Today was a good one at the $2/$4 badugi tables (a little over a year ago I was playing limit hold 'em at the two and four cent level, so at that rate I'll be playing some form of $200/$400 limit poker by Easter 2012). There's still plenty of bad-ugi at these stakes, but some players are significantly more aggressive than you'll see at 25c/50c. I took a lot of notes today, and boy do you have to take notes. There were several interesting hands, some of which I've saved in a file, but so as not to give away too much information to the many thousands who read my blog, I'm only posting one of them. I'll also post an annoyingly typical single draw hand and four triple draw hands - it really is time I stopped playing that stupid bloody game.

Hand 1
I don't get excited easily these days (blame the medication) but I will admit to a whoop of delight when I unexpectedly won this hand and the half-a-Ben Franklin pot (it's a Ulysses Grant, I just checked). What should I do with my J632? Make it a Q632 and I'd break; I'd probably break a J432 three-way as well, but I think patting is clearly the way to go here. Cheeky Fish has been playing aggressively and running well prior to this hand, while Aabed has been opening two-card draws in any position. So that's the easy bit out of the way. Now when Cheeky raises me on the turn I've got to think my jack is no good. But his confidence looks to be sky-high after hitting all those sixes, he probably thinks he can win any pot he enters, so I feel he just might be trying to push me off my hand. It was still a surprise to see the king.

Hand 2
It's that common tricky situation again, out of position with a pat hand against a one-card draw. I bet 60% of the pot with my 9-7-yuck, and then yowzers! Did I bet enough? Should I have just checked? I'm getting about 5:3 on my call, but I'd be surprised if he was bluffing three-eighths of the time.

Hand 4
I'm sure this was a bad snow. My logic for making this move is that I'd seen three eights but no sevens, so JP is extremely likely to have a seven draw. In other words I could quite possibly hit my draw but lose anyway and have to pay off multiple bets on the end. By snowing I eliminate that possibility! But 8632 is really too good a draw to sacrifice in this way.

I expected JP to bet the flop here (he'd been playing aggressively) but he didn't, and trying for a check-raise and then a snow with my trip deuces cost me in the end. I'm trying to figure out JP's play - the only thing that makes sense is a slow-played seven or smooth eight.

Taking a short break

On Sunday I played my first session of 50c/$1 single draw, dropped $56, and decided I wouldn't play any poker until Friday's early bird tournament. I was feeling depressed; when you're depressed it's hard to make rational decisions, and if you can't make rational decisions you're setting light to money. In recent weeks I'd got into a few bad habits, cooking meals while playing being the worst of them. When I'm playing poker I should only be playing poker. No phone calls, no emailing, no TV, definitely no stir-fries. Eating is OK (depending on what it is), music is fine, but that's about it.

Over the last month or so, the 25c/50c single draw tables have been populated by players trying to see a draw as cheaply as possible with their 8632 or 7542. If I'm honest it was getting to be a drag. But when I tried the next level of the game, the stakes had been raised in more ways than one. There were outrageous bluffs and people going to war with 10-8's. If I was in a better mental state it would have been a lot more fun that I've had in this game for ages.
I've also had a go at stud high for pretty much the first time ever - it's a fascinating game. I've only tried micro stakes (10c/20c) so far, which is just as well because I don't yet know what I'm doing. At these stakes a lot of players continue beyond third street (often way beyond) with just about anything, so hand reading (for me anyway) is incredibly difficult. As so many pots are multi-way, I now feel I should be aiming for big-pot hands - big trips, big straights, big flushes and full houses. So (QT)J would seem to be more playable than (55)Q, but that's only a hunch. I've already seen dozens of apparently junky starting hands turn into gold, so maybe I should just be following the herd and playing any three cards, whether rolled up aces or (72)9 rainbow. At this stage I simply don't know.
Hand 1
I just called Vindel's min-raise post-draw - at 25c/50c it's normally an eight (at least!). There's no way I'm folding here (unless I'm on a complete snow) so his raise makes no sense at all. But maybe that's precisely the point. Everybody on the table now thinks he's batshit crazy. Soon after this he went nuts with some other junk hand (AQJ94 or the like); then everyone knew he was batshit crazy. These moves had significant meta-game implications (or is it mega-game?) for the rest of the session when he ran red hot and got paid off handsomely.

I needed reads (which I didn't have until later) to reraise this big open-raise. I wish I'd just called and drawn. When he shoves I have to fold - my 10-8 is almost certainly dead, I don't have the odds to draw, and of course I've got no implied odds.

Hand 4
This was the biggie. My last hand of the session. I'm three-betting a lot of draws here, but when Musketss (who has so far done nothing out of the ordinary) comes over the top I figure I'm up against at least a nine, probably a 9-7 or better. There's even a small chance I'm drawing dead, and if Vindel hadn't cold-called the $17 I think I'd have let this go. When Musketss bets $10 out of position there's a chance he's got a better hand than my rough eight, but when Vindel min-raises (again) I'm pretty sure I'm dead. Still, given his earlier antics there's no way I can fold. At least I hung on to my last four bucks - over time those add up.

Hand 5
I see this situation in badugi from time to time. Someone donks into a pat hand after they've drawn. It makes no sense to me but normally it means they have some kind of badugi, even when they've drawn two. Just about any badugi beats my K-10 so I just call here, but I turn my hand face up as a crappy badugi (I guess I could just call with a monster too). Then to my slight surprise he draws again, and donks into me again! My initial call on the flop gives him licence to snow, especially on the last draw, which is why I decide to call on the end.

Rant over...

I was going to post some hands in my last blog entry but got sidetracked in a rant about Poker Stars' payout structures. In single draw cash games I'm essentially break-even over my last 4000 hands, badugi isn't much better while triple draw is marginally worse.

Hand 1
I should never have let my stack get this low. I did add a few dollars just after this hand. I'd been getting mainly junk so far; sometimes you just have to make a move.

Hand 3
This one was from Wednesday's early bird tournament and is straight out of the WTF files. I was decidedly unlucky to run my number seven into a better pat hand, but how on earth did I remain in the tournament after this? How did Rugged not shove? I only survived a few more hands: Rugged got dealt an 8-7 and I missed my smooth eight draw.

Fakemode wasn't a bad player but he was fairly new. I like to three-bet monster draws at times because I tend to get more action after the draw that way. He very nearly folded to my pre-draw reraise, and I guess if he was more experienced he might have folded to my shove.

Hand 5
This was an interesting one. I get number six...suited. What do I do? Facing a raise I've got three sensible options (flat-out folding is surely silly). Option one: call and draw to 8432. Option two: reraise and draw to 8432, bluffing with any club if it's checked to me after the draw, and bluff-raising with the lower clubs (5, 7 and maybe 9) if I'm facing a bet. Option three (which I picked): reraise and snow. Looking back, I think I chose the wrong option. I've got a big draw here despite its suitedness (throwing away a fifth club makes it slightly better) but by snowing I forfeit all my showdown value. This is a totally different situation from Hand 1 where my draw is bad and I'm not compromising much by patting. Either of the first two options would have been better.

Hand 7
Down to two tables in yesterday's tournament. I make a basic error here. When Melnik shoves he's drawing maybe 30% of the time, so my rough jack has a 15% chance of beating him. I therefore need to get 6:1 to call. I'm getting nowhere near that so I should fold. It's interesting how sensitive my decision is to Melnik's stack size. If he had say 2800, not only would I be getting a better price on my call but he'd also be shoving many more draws, increasing my chance of winning. I really need to start using my time bank (which I currently hardly ever do) to help me make these decisions.

Melnik came back from the dead to finish second. Should I be three-betting with this hand? I think I'm the best player left so perhaps I should be looking to reduce variance, but three-handed a seven draw - even with a gutshot - is a monster. When I make a 9-7 I've got no choice but to put Melnik all in, but my luck runs out here.

Blue is good

Some blue figures have started appearing in my poker spreadsheet. Blue is good. My profit for the very young 2011 moved into positive territory yesterday after a good result in the "early bird" (6:50 am) single draw tournament. I finished third out of 55 without having to rebuy, turning $5.50 into $72.50. I ran insanely well in the early stages although I was helped by some very poor play from my opponents. I made the nuts on the very first hand and found someone willing to stack off with a 9-8. I was then dealt a pat 9-8 of my own, not a huge hand but plenty good enough against someone who doesn't know the rules of the game, and I was up to 7000 after half an hour. The luck factor in these tournaments comes from who you happen to get on your table as much as the cards you get. When we got down to three I was in second place with chip counts of 85,000, 40,000 and 5000. My strongest opponent had just been knocked out and I felt I could quite easily win the whole thing, but the short stack got lucky against the big stack a couple of times, then he made a 9-6 to my 9-7 to leave me short, and I didn't recover. A shame I couldn't win it, but after my recent run of bad luck in that tournament I was happy with third.

A quick message to Poker Stars: fix your payout structures, dammit! This tournament has an overlay (that's to say, free money) and if anything I benefited from their wacky payout calculations, so perhaps I'm in no position to complain but there are two problems I see:

1. When the tournament doesn't reach its guarantee the total prize pool is $500. Great. But here's the weird bit. If there are 45 entrants they pay out the top seven but when there are 55 the top ten get paid so everyone (except 8th, 9th and 10th obviously) gets a smaller slice of the $500 pie, including the winner. So if you win the tournament from a field of 55 you get less than you do if you win from a field of 45, even though it's obviously harder to win when there are 55 players. I've simplified things a bit because rebuys come into play in this tournament, but I think that when the guarantee isn't reached they should just pay the top seven regardless. Seven out of 55 is plenty anyway.

2. The payouts themselves aren't smooth - they have weird jumps in them that don't make any sense. I've noticed this in pretty much every MTT I've seen.

Here were the payouts from yesterday's tournament:
1st...................$150
2nd...................$95
3rd..................$72.50
4th...................$47.50
5th...................$36.25
6th...................$27.50
7th...................$22.50
8th to 10th.........$16.25

The gap between 2nd and 3rd is too small, 3rd and 4th too big, 4th and 5th too small... Presumably they use some kind of formula - I'd love to know what it is. Why can't they just give second 65% of first (sounds about right), third say 70% of second, and slightly higher percentages as you go down? Here's how I'd split the $500 pie:

1st............$163
2nd............$106
3rd............$74
4th............$55
5th............$42
6th............$33
7th............$27

Here's a graph of their payout scale against mine. I hope you'll agree that mine is smoother :-)

At sixes and sevens (well sevens and eights actually)

Another single draw shocker. It looked like there were some loose players out there, so I put $60 on two tables, but when almost half of that was gone within 52 hands, I decided I'd had enough. Is it just me or has the game changed lately? I thought 2-7 single draw was about getting reads on opponents, executing bluffs, picking off bluffs, making thin value bets. Now it's all about making sevens and eights. It's very hard to win any decent-sized pot without a seven or an eight. Am I the only player in the game who would rather draw one to 9754 than two to 732? It sure feels that way. It's become more like triple draw all of a sudden, albeit the no-limit version which I haven't yet dared to try.

Here are the highlights (!) of my short sharp shock session (say that ten times fast*):

Hand 1 of 52: I get T8654 in the BB. UTG player min-raises, it folds round to me, I reraise him to $3, he min-four-bets to $5 and I call. I decide to draw, hit my straight, check, he bets $2 into a $10+ pot and I don't have the balls to check-raise him, figuring that with all that min-betting he might well have a monster hand.

Hand 11: It folds to me in the SB and I raise with KT974. BB calls, we both draw one. I pair my four but the BB makes 66542 and I take down a small pot. He could have bluffed there.

Hand 14: I raise in position with J8642, we both take one, I hit an ace and lose to a 10-9.

Hand 22: I get 97752 in the BB. There's a limp and a min-raise, which I call as does the limper. I take one, limper takes two, raiser takes one. I make 98752 but I'm out of position and won't get value from much worse so I check and win a smallish pot. The limper made JT983! Surely I'll start beating these players again.

Hand 24: I get T7653 in the SB. Folds round to the cut-off who only has 60 cents, which he puts in the middle. Button calls, I raise to $2, button folds. Mr 60 cents has a pat 98652 and I lose.

Hand 28: Folds round to me in the cut-off. I raise to $1.50 with JT842. BB calls me and draws one, I stand pat. We check it down; BB shows me the nuts.

Hand 30: I get J7632 in middle position. UTG limps, I raise to $1.50, not minding if the pot goes multi-way. Button calls, UTG calls. All three of us draw one, I hit a nine. UTG checks, I bet $3.50, then the button shoves for $17.75. I very nearly misclick call (I was busy on my other table when this table suddenly reappeared) but manage to locate the fold button. I'm guessing 87632 is probably a fold too in that spot.

Hand 32: I get K9643 in the SB. Cut-off raises to $1.50, button calls, I call, BB calls. Four-way to the draw. I draw one and make 96543, BB draws one, CO pats, button draws two. I bet $4 into a $5.70 pot, BB calls, CO folds, button raises to $8.50, I think about it and make a crying call, BB calls. Button wins a handsome $30 pot with his miracle number two while the BB also has me beat with 87643.

Hand 33: UTG opens to a big fat three bucks, I decide to call on the button with my Q8532 (I've got big implied odds with that draw after all). We both draw one, I hit an ace and lose to Q6543. What sort of draw is that? I guess if you must open UTG with that hand, you're better off patting and bombing the pot after the draw.

Hand 35: I get 88762 UTG, raise and get no callers. For once a standard hand.

Hand 43: I'm not involved here, but the five players who are draw ten cards between them in a limped pot. What happens if you run out of cards in single draw? They all check it down after the draw. The fourth player to act had drawn two to make the nuts; presumably he was hoping the last player (who had also drawn two) had made the second nuts.

Hand 45: I get 87652 on the cut-off five-handed. I raise but alas get no callers.

Hand 52: I get Q9853 UTG five-handed. I don't know why I didn't open this. The fold worked out OK though - the BB shoved for $10.60.

All of that happened in 20 minutes. I showed down nine hands (that's a shedload in that time), seven of them losers. The champagne will remain on ice for some time methinks.

* I've got a handful of shares (not many) in a company called Smiths City. They're a chain of department stores based mainly in the South Island. It's hard to say "Smiths City shares" without saying "shitty", which is appropriate given their performance.

The long road to zero

It's a case of two steps forward, two steps back at the moment. I should be thankful that it isn't one and three. If and when my profit for the year hits zero I'll be cracking open the champagne. I've had promising runs in a couple of single draw tournaments but neither amounted to much. On Friday with 13 left and seven paying, I was dealt a 9-5 but collided with a pat 87432. This morning on Full Tilt I ran pretty well, making the second nuts twice and taking down a lot of sizeable pots with nines (which are worth more in tournaments where the play is looser). Unfortunately my luck ran out at the final table and I finished up fifth for a small payout. Here are eight recent hands of note:

Hand 1
My play was bad here. I should either have called the smallish reraise and drawn to the smooth nine, or just folded. Calling and patting paints a big "bluff me" target on my back. I guess I could make this play with a big hand, and it would be something I'd do so infrequently that I might not need to balance it much.

I'm not sure if Dazanack's slow-play is the best idea in the long run, but it worked here OK. I thought for a while before breaking - make my hand T7542 and there would have been no hesitation - but maybe I should have just folded getting a little less than two to one; I had just six outs.

Gerrr puts in too much action here. Maybe I didn't put in enough - pat sixes are rare after all. His three-bet on the flop is fine - I'd probably do the same with his hand - but when I cap he's got to think he's probably toast. Raising the turn was throwing money away. Who knows - perhaps people are just that much more aggressive at $2/$4.
