More KCL hands

I haven't run particularly well in single draw since my last post, winning just nine (well 8½ actually) of 31 hands at showdown. Here are some hands:

Hand 1
Calling this bet is probably a mistake at these stakes.

I think I played this hand well, breaking the 10-8 out of position three-way, and of course I hit my best possible card to make number eleven only to run into number ten.

Back in business

I had a good run on Friday night and Saturday morning. My bankroll is currently just above $500 having been in the $350s a week ago. Here are a bunch of semi-interesting single draw hands:

Hand 1
I don't often break a 987 but it's not an easy hand to play out of position. My play worked out nicely here.

Only my fourth hand at the table. If I was Jon I'd have folded instead of shoving, although I would have folded numerous better hands to his shove. Some people call big all-ins with draws; I'm not one of those people.

Hand 7
I posted this one on a forum. The consensus was that I should have just called the raise, mainly to balance my just-calling range but also because my eight flush outs seriously hurt me. I posted about a similar hand here (see hand 5); that time I chose a different (wrong?) option but also got away with it.

One in four chance I'll lose the lot

I tried to work out my risk of ruin today at work (in Excel - I think there are online poker calculators that do it but using those would have meant risking an additional kind of ruin). With 99 big bets left, and assuming a win rate of two big bets per hundred, I made it 24%.

A shot from hell

Realising that I can't be playing poker if I want to "go anywhere", I took a shot at $2-$4 badugi tonight. I've played at that level before but on a much bigger bankroll. Tonight I dropped $122 in 231 hands, winning just three showdowns out of sixteen. At one stage I was up $50, having won two showdowns out of four, but then I got coolered left, right and centre. Remarkably the only winning hand I showed down after that was a 64A that picked off a snow. My bankroll is now $397 so three more sessions like that and this poker lark will finally be consigned to history.

Edit: I've now lost $387 in my last 615 hands at that limit (won 28% of showdowns). That's a win rate of -15.7 BB per 100. My win rate tonight (-13.2 BB per 100) represents an improvement!

Deserved better

In my second and last attempt at qualifying for the WCOOP single draw, I finished fourth out of twelve. The winner made it while the next two both got a useful $55 back. My "prize" was five bucks, i.e. a net loss of $28. Simply put, I deserved better.

Update: I wrote that within a minute or two of my exit; I was just a bit bummed I didn't make it, or at least snag one of the $55 rebates. There was no overlay but there was a mega-fish, which amounts to much the same thing. Unfortunately he got stupidly lucky, hitting two-card draws for fun as his 1500 starting stack grew to over 7000. He eventually grabbed one of the rebates. He hailed from Morocco; he and I chatted in French for a bit, which was good until someone said "English only please". I don't quite get Stars' ruling on that to be honest. The best thing about that satellite was that I didn't have to get up before six this morning.

I did play a successful cash session of single draw after the satellite. Here are two hands from that session in which I made $42:

Hand 1
What a call! I've never seen someone make a call like this (against me at least) in over 30,000 hands.

Hand 2
This guy was really bad. He'd limp in the small blind with practically any hand. Whenever it folded round to him in the SB I'd just raise my BB and pat any hand (like this) and bet after the draw, unless I happened have a good one-card draw.

I'm currently playing badugi; there are some interesting monkey dynamics at my table.

Hand 3
Both my opponents reraised pre and drew two! Then the 32A effect kicked in, making for a ridiculously big pot when you consider that nobody had a badugi until the river.

I have no problem opening this double-suited hand on the button, or calling the flop bet in a bloated pot, but what about the turn? I think it could go either way.

Onwards and upwards

My bankroll has just broken through the $500 barrier. Last weekend was a pretty good one even if I couldn't make it into the $215 WCOOP single draw. Only five entered for the $33 satellite - the winner gained a place so there was a $50 overlay. Unfortunately I could only come third. This mini-tournament was a far cry from any of the KCL I'm used to - either the tight 25c/50c cash tables or the passive low-stakes tournaments. This was proper, loose aggressive KCL. It would have been a lot of fun if we weren't so short-stacked. I might give the satellite one more go tomorrow night.

My Sunday night finished with a win in a micro limit badugi tournament. When we got heads-up, I was behind for most of our protracted battle (134 hands), surviving an all-in when my Q8 badugi held up. I gradually clawed my way back. My opponent then survived three all-ins himself before I ended proceedings on my fourth match point.

As I was writing this, I played a single draw hand that I'd rather forget. Here I turn my 10-8-yuck into a bluff after the draw. I didn't stay above $500 for long.

Update: After a half-decent $1/$2 badugi session, my bankroll is now $509. The player to my right in that session is someone I'll have to watch out for. He was capable of cleverly-chosen snows and slow-plays not usually seen at those stakes.

August monthly report

I'm happy to report that I made $290 in August, which is pretty good going when you consider that I started the month with just a few "cash" dollars and a few tournament dollars. My bankroll is now $303. I did hit the speed wobbles towards the end of the month though - most notably in a car-crash one-hour triple draw session - and am now sitting almost $50 off my high for the month. I might have a crack at satelliting into the $215 (wow!) single draw WCOOP event at the weekend.
