September monthly report
My cash balance on PokerStars rose by $484 in September to $3357, but that's a bit deceptive because I sold $502 of tournament money, nearly half of which I already had at the start of the month. In cash games alone I was down slightly. I ran badly at both 1/2 and 2/4 badugi, but was partly saved by a hot run at 50c/$1 (+$257 over 2735 hands). Last night I dropped $84 in 160 hands of 2/4; I've won only five of my last 23 showdowns. Some of those were attempts to pick off snows with strong tri hands that I'd played aggressively earlier in the hand. Maybe I'm calling down too much in those spots. It's tricky because my opponents know I've probably got a strong tri, which means I'm likely to want to bluff-catch, which means they shouldn't bluff, which means I should fold the river, which means they can bluff sometimes.

Stud-8 thoughts
There's something fascinating about a new poker game. I'm certainly finding stud-8 fascinating as I see many spots (that might be common in the game) for the first time. So far I'm ahead but only just, and I've only been playing micro limits (10c/20c and 25c/50c). Like most other games, I'm playing fewer hands than my opponents: a little over a quarter, which still seems on the high side but I imagine that would come down in tighter games. I picked up Super System 2 from the library and have been reading and trying to take in the stud-8 chapter. Many of the concepts are far from obvious, to me at least.
I think I've got a handle on what low hands you can play. You really want to have the best low draw, and as much chance as possible of also making a high. Eight draws (and even some seven draws) are problematic unless you have an ace, a straight draw or a flush draw. Things like 862 without a three-flush can normally hit the muck unless you're the only player going low. If you brick a good low draw on fourth street, you can normally call one bet to see fifth; it helps if your brick is a low card that has given you a pair because your opponents won't know you've made a pair. High hands - even pairs of aces - still cause me a bit of trouble however. Here are a few hands from my short stud-8 "career":

I made a dreadfully awful fold on third here. I guess one of the difficulties of this hand is that you have to reraise it, basically telling everyone I either have wired aces or rolled-up eights. This was just my eighth hand at the table and I couldn't figure out what Identite had. With no hearts dead, a low three-flush (possibly with a straight draw as well) should have been top of the list. Somehow I had rolled-up fives in my head. He turned out to be a bit of a monkey and he could have had a lot of hands other than the flush he showed up with. I don't know whether my river bet was that bad. Presumably my play on earlier streets is OK; maybe there's a case for folding sixth.

You do not have enough chips to continue...
I've seen rather too much of that pop-up box over the last week. I've had a horror run in badugi. I just dumped another $100 on a 2/4 table, the coup de grâce being the last hand where I called a raise in the big blind five-way with 743, hit the lovely ace of hearts immediately but lost to someone who made 653A on the same draw. Overall I won three of my eleven showdowns. The table is still running and I'm sure it would be profitable for me to play, but it's a sunny day (with virtually no wind - that's almost unheard of in Wellington) and I'd be better off getting outside.
Triple draw is much the same. The whole game seems like a tournament. You might hang around for a while but unless you're very lucky you will lose all your chips eventually.
I picked up Super System 2 from the library. I'm trying to learn stud hi-lo; at the moment it's a black art.
My bankroll is currently $3350 or thereabouts, down from a high of almost $3600. My confidence in poker is down too. I've just got to remind myself where I came from. Here are a couple of stud-8 hands that might give me some confidence. I know it's tiny stakes, but I'm still learning the game at the moment.
