Please let this be over

I got taken to the cleaners today. Again. I was hampered by a distinct inability to actually hit anything, while my opponents were hitting huge hands for fun. I really want this poker shit to be over, and to cash out the $4500-odd I've got on both sites, but I'm "only" 900 points or so from getting a $50 bonus on Stars so I'll wait until then. Today was such a nice day outside, and here I was, staring at a frigging screen losing three-figure amounts. What a waste.

Update: I played heaps today. Now it's points that matter, not dollars, and there are just under 800 points to go. It's a bit like pulling teeth. By the way it was a real up-and-down day which included my biggest ever winning session at 50c/$1 badugi ($76 in 335 hands) and a bad stack-off with a rough eight in single draw.

Keeping at it

Since mid-September online poker hasn't been a lot of fun. I could run much better. With seven days of November left I'm essentially even for the month (down a little on Stars and up slightly on the new incarnation of Full Tilt). I tried ace-to-five triple draw on Full Tilt last night. It looked profitable, with people going crazy with rough sevens, but I couldn't hit goddamn thing. Variance seems even higher in that game than in 2-7 (if that's possible): I'm playing a few more hands, which will push variance up, but my opponents are playing a lot more, creating big pots and sending variance through the roof.

Last weekend I played an interesting three-handed session of 25c/50c on Full Tilt. I made $30 in just 90 hands, winning 11 of 13 showdowns. One of my opponents was terrible and was dealt a pat hand about 20% of the time, and you can imagine what some of those hands looked like. Often when I raised him he'd try to reraise me off my made seven or eight. Obviously I drew well in that session; sometimes I couldn't beat a pat ten or jack over three draws if my life depended on it.

Never have I been happier to bust out of a tournament than on Saturday night. After 3½ hours, at about 1:30am, I was out of the MicroMillions badugi in 467th place out of 2488. I only won one pot in the super-deep first hour, and I thought if I could lose my internet connection in the second hour I'd probably make the final table. In the third hour I went on a good run to reach 20,000 (four times my starting stack) after earlier surviving an all-in, but it was all downhill from there and frankly my eventual demise was a relief. In a couple of hours I'll have a go at the triple draw MicroMillions.

Update:
I'm out of the triple draw tournament in the middle of the field. Just like in the badugi, we started with 5000 chips. I never got above 7000. A few times I felt I was just one decent pot away from making some headway, but that pot never ended up on my lap. It's never too disappointing to get knocked out of a micro tournament though.

Hand 1
Here's the only really notable hand from the MicroMillions. Konstant earlier drew one all the way and made a three-card king. He clearly didn't know what he was doing; I thought he might not even know the rules. Maybe my cap on the flop was overkill but I was sure I had heaps of equity three-way.

MicroMillions misery?

I'm planning on playing the MicroMillions badugi tournament on Stars tonight. The buy-in is $3.30 and it starts at 10pm my time, just after I've finished babysitting my cousin's boys. I don't know why I'm playing a tournament that has the potential to be absolute purgatory, but there you go. The SCOOP tournament 2½ years ago in which I finished second, after a drawn-out heads-up battle, took just over 14 hours. This one also starts us all off with 125 big bets (!) but has shorter levels (10 minutes instead of 15). I'm expecting it to go nine hours. If I bomb out early I'll be quite happy. If I make the final table, likewise. Unfortunately there's a very real chance that I'll go deep and be eliminated on the bubble or for a tiny cash.

Edit: Yet another losing session at $1/$2 badugi. I have a knack for winning only the pots that don't really matter. Making a bad turn fold to two bets cold with a ten didn't help either. A suggestion for Stars: hands where you take part of the showdown winnings but make an overall loss on the hand should be excluded from the "won at showdown" stats. You're telling me I've won six of eleven at showdown, but three of those "wins" were tiny side pots that were hardly worth having.
